Elementary music is taught in 2nd-4th grades with a focus on instrumental studies. The Recorder Karate Program teaches basic music theory skills through a progression of 18 songs that increase in difficulty. Each song is paired with a specific music theory lesson. Students earn “karate belts”, which are placed on the student’s recorder with the mastery of each individual song. Upon mastery of 9 songs, students are given the title “Black Belt” in recorder and are awarded with a certificate for “Highest Honors” in recorder performance.
